I am planning on staying in Provence during the last week of May or first week of June and was wondering what is the best town to stay in. My wife and I are 30 and love food and wine. I would also appreciate any hotel suggestions.

Big town, small village, will you have a car, which part of Provence do you think you will visit etc.?

For a small town suggestion.....
My husband, friend, %26amp; I stayed in Arles last summer. It is strongly influenced with Roman signs and there is an awesome Roman (A/C!) museum. Vincent van Gogh also created some of his art here. The town is easy to walk around in and the food is good. They also have humane bullfights. The people are gracious and helpful.
We stayed Hotel Acacias at 2, rue de la Cavalerie. If they%26#39;re full, they refer you to a neighboring hotel and we stayed there also.

I agree that Arles would be a great town to stay in. We stayed in Arles last year and loved it. Lots of character with lots to see (especially loved the Provence Museum) and do. And great restaurants - do not miss L%26#39;Atelier.
We stayed at Le Calendal and I can heartily recommend it.

I stayed in Ansouis the summer before last and was so fond of the town and the beatiful little apartment that we rented, that there is a return visit booked for this summer. http://maison.de.clementine.free.fr look at the smaller apartment in town.
We loved the Friday market in Lourmarin.

My name is Delphine and I live in Provence.
Even if I think that Arles is an interesting city, you should choose a more central town in order to have all the major touristic sights around.
I would suggest the region of Aix en Provence or from that city to the north : Salon de Provence...
Then depends of wich category of hotel you are searching for... I think in May/June, you will appreciate a hotel having a swimming pool as it is usually warm at this period of the year...

I think that we will be renting a car so getting around to the smaller towns won%26#39;t really be a problem, but I really don%26#39;t want to have to drive to dinner, I would rather walk or grab a cab if that is possible. So I guess I%26#39;m looking for a nice town with good food and atmosphere. Also we will be staying in London, Paris, and Nice, so we will be in cities the rest of the trip. I was thinking Aix, Avignon, Arles, or St. Remy, but would love to hear other suggestions and hotel options up to $300 a night.

Hi
I also live here and run a chambre d%26#39;hote. I agree that Arles is a nice town but too far south to stay for ease to see the whole of Provence. Look perhaps at the area around Isle sur la Sorgue. Look at this site or www.avignon-et-provence.com
Have a great holiday

I would stay in Avignon. You could average your budget by staying half the time at the Hotel d%26#39;Europe and half at the L%26#39;Horloge. See the TA reviews. I would suuggest starting at the L%26#39;Horloge, pleasant and cheap and then upgrade to the Europe, superb but not cheap. They are close to each other and to everything of interest in the city.
When we have been in Arles, it has been stuffed full of tourists and school groups. Well worth a visit but not a place to stay.
