winery visits

My husband and I are planning our third trip to Provence in May. Staying at a rented villa in Mazan, near Carpentras, for 11 days. Any suggestions for great winery visits? We are %26quot;equal opportunity%26quot; wine drinkers -- love red, white and pink -- but speak very little French. Thanks for any help.

Comprehensive list from Toutou (thanks Toutou noted a few more for ourselves).

Don%26#39;t forget Chateauneuf de Papes - google Mont Redon (I think I have spelling right - there might be an i in it somewhere but having a senior moment!). Comprehensive range of %26quot;equal opportunity %26quot; wines to sample and buy.

For day to day drinking we buy pink on draft from the Cave at Vacqueyras-get the Cote du Rhone en vrac - a little more money but worth it.

There is also a clearly marked tourist route around the cotes du rhone villages which is also worth a tour.

There is a small producer on the road from Carpentras to Monmorion selling Cotes du Ventoux - Domaine du Jacquart. Stubled upon this two years ago (and continue to stumble very time we try another bottle).

|||

Funny, I%26#39;ve passed by Jacquart so many times, but never stopped. Guess I%26#39;ll have to make a stop now. Thanks for the tip.

Oh and the domaine I mentioned in Flassan is really great. It is considered a %26quot;boutique%26quot; domaine as it is relatively small. They have some of the best white viognier to be had in this region.... yes white (we%26#39;re not particularly known for any decent whites around here). Their reds are great too. I especially enjoy the Cuvee Veronique. Give it a try Bouche, next time you are in the area. You won%26#39;t be sorry. You%26#39;ll most likely pass by my house on your way.

Cheers !

Thanks Toutou - will definately try as always on the look out for white in the region.

I forgot to mention. Be prepared for the price..... The Viognier from Flassan goes for just under 10 euros a bottle - VERY expensive for these parts.

Thats OK will stop me drinking too much!

Chat soon.

Thanks for all those great suggestions. And I can tell by reading other postings that toutou and boucheboy can be trusted with their recommendations. Love the price point! I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll enjoy several (probably more than several) bottles during our visit.

May I push my luck and ask you for restaurant recommendations too? Inexpensive is, of course, our preference and I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll have several secret finds whick I hope you%26#39;ll share. We love a good meal and don%26#39;t mind springing for an expensive one occassionally but w/ the dollar so weak.... We%26#39;d probably opt for an expensive lunch then enjoy nibbles by the pool in the evening w/ some of that great cheap wine.

Merci!

Gloria

Here are a few of our favorites:

Bedoin (most restaurants in Bedoin don’t accept credit cards):

Best boulangerie Pain Ancienne Beside the TABAC – blue wood entrance way Second best Rouvier – across from Mairie (town hall)

Good outdoor dining Le Portail d’Olivier

Great salads Good fondue (only served at night and for 2 people min.)

L’ Escapade (in Hotel L’ Escapade) recently bought by Le Portail d’Olivier Good plat du jour More varied menu, good service

Excellent food/service/atmosphere and winelist

Restaurant St. Colombe Route du Mt. Ventoux

In the small village of St. Colombe Two good menus – closes Oct. to March

Good dining with a view Le Mas des Vignes (normally one fixed menu with two or three choices for each course) - not sure if they take credit cards Great views from their terrace – closed in winter

Outside of Bedoin:

Four A Chaux Caromb/Le Barroux Very nice restaurant with lovely terrace, good wines by the glass or bottle and great service

Restaurant Saint Hubert Entrechaux Reminds me of a hunting lodge. Has great food, but not Well suited for vegetarians.

Le Panoramic Crestet Ice-cream and small snacks with a drop

dead view

Les Florets Gigondas Excellent food, service, wine list and

Gigondas gorgeous terrace

Restaurant La Nesque Villes sur Auzon Nice food and pretty terrace

My favourite, about an hour from Carpentras, is Chateau Val Joanis in Pertuis.

Excellent Red, white and Rose and the setting is amazing, especially if you like gardens.
