Barging on the Canal du Midi in Oct 07

My husband and I and another couple have booked a barge from Carcassonne to Agde in October 07 as part of a Rugby World Cup grand tour. We are looking for info on the best towns along our route to overnight. Also some info on these recommendations - eg recommended resturants, are there marinas, laundromats, taxis, shopping, and so on. Also, our friends will be taking off for Paris on the middle weekend (for the semis and finals) - so what%26#39;s the best place to hold-over that weekend?

Not wanting to see your post go answered, I%26#39;ll offer the following reference to a recent post by someone else which should answer most of your questions:

Your boat rental company usually provides you with canal maps which highlight marinas and restaurants. Taxis are available, so are laundromats (though not inexpensive and it is easy to carry a bit of laundry soap in a plastic bag with you). You may actually spend the night anywhere along your route. You are free to moor just about anywhere.

If you have friends meeting/leaving you in route, taxis are available from anywhere to take them to the nearest train station. Your boat rental company should have more detailed information.

Consult the Office de Tourisme in any town along your route for detailed information and directions.

Thanks for the advice, I have alredy saved the details on that thread and have studied the guide provided by our barge operator. I am still looking for more details on the specific towns where others may have stopped over - having trouble finding much on the WEB anywhere.

newmom06,

I recommend contacting all of the companies listed below. I have used Crown Blue on many occasions but the other principal companies are also excellent:

There is also a list on the VNF website (in French only) at:

Hi there

Saw your message while looking for a hotel in Carcassonne. We live in Ireland now but previously lived in Sydney.

My husband and I have also booked a barge trip from Negra to Carcassonne on the Midi Canal last week in May 07. We would be happy to pass on any info that we might gather along the way. We booked our trip with Locaboat Holidays at www.boatingholidays.com and they have sent us lots of brochures and general info for our trip also a manual which I think is a must under health and safety. If you would like we could send these on to you early June when we have finished with them.
