Hi!
I%26#39;ll be travelling arriving at Paris Gare de Lyon station from Barcelona in July. From there, I%26#39;ll be going to Mannheim. I%26#39;ve checked the train timetables and am planning to take the ICE train to Mannheim from Paris Est via Saarbrücken.
I%26#39;m confused as to how to get to Paris Est from Paris Gare de Lyon. I%26#39;ve read somewhere that Paris Nord and Paris Est are very near. So I thought I%26#39;d take the metro from Paris Gare de Lyon to Paris Nord. And then walk to the Paris Est station.
However, when I checked the routes at the website http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de, the recommended way from Paris Lyon to Paris Est was to take the RER D to Paris Nord. Walk to Paris Magenta. Take RER E to Chelles Gournay. And then take a regional train from there to Paris Est. Why the long route?
Are Paris Gare de L%26#39;Est and Paris Est different? I saw on the metro map that Paris Gare L%26#39;Est is very near Paris Gare du Nord. Why do I have to go all the way to Chelles Gournay to take a regional train to Paris Est?

Forget about reiseauskunft.bahn, there are giving you RER schedules (some RER are operated by the French railways and some by the RATP, this is probably where the confusion comes from)
You certainly don%26#39;t want to take the RER to Chelles Gournay to get from Gare de Lyon to Gare de l%26#39;Est.. Take the metro, change at Bastille and you%26#39;ll get directly at Gare de l%26#39;Est.

have a look on this site .. type you departure station and your destination station , it gives you the different ways to go , so you can compare .. if you want to make it very easy , the best solution is a taxi off course but much more expensive

Gare de Lyon, Gare de l%26#39;Est and Gare du Nord are the proper names. I have no clue what Deutsche Bahn is thinking of with that routing! If I were travelling reasonably light I would probably take the RER D Line to GduN and then walk less than ten minutes from there to Gare de l%26#39;Est. (Even if I am just passing through Paris a ten minute walk is better than nothing!) Otherwise I would probably take a taxi at a cost of perhaps 15€.
It probably does not matter in terms of travel time and there may not be a train that fits your itinerary but my preference if I were travelling from Paris to Mannheim would be to take the new TGV from Paris via Strasbourg to Karlsruhe and change there for Mannheim.
Don%26#39;t you want to break your journey between Barcelona and Mannheim in any case? Not in Paris? Or even Strasbourg? That seems like an awfully long trip to be making without a break...
Whatever you decide, bon voyage!

Hello!
Thank you all for the advice! I%26#39;m very relieved to know that we don%26#39;t have to take such a long route. We%26#39;ll probably take the RER to Paris Nord and walk / take the metro straight via Bastille.

There isn%26#39;t a TGV train to Mannheim after 1724. We only reach Paris at 1725 according to the train schedule. The last train is the ICE.

Yes, it is a very long trip. At first we had plan to take the overnight train to Paris, but the Trenhotel price is expensive and not covered under our Eurail pass. So we%26#39;re taking the day train instead (Talgo / TGV) We are also hoping to save some money by travelling straight to Mannheim. I have a friend who%26#39;s there and we can bunk with him... But our plans for that day are not set yet... It%26#39;s my first backpacking trip in Europe. Excited and also nervous. :)
Thanks again for all your help!
