Mona Lisa - are bookings necessary?

Hi, We will be in Paris for a week over New Years. Is it necessary to book a specific timeslot to view the Mona Lisa or do you just shuffle through with everyone else?

Where would be the best spot for a memorable midnight experience,I%26#39;m guessing the Arc d%26#39;Triompe is the centre of New Year celebrations. Coming from Sydney where it is of course summer for NYE there is a whole night of activities around the harbour, does the cold weather deter people from being out %26amp; about?

No there are no pre-set times for viewing Mona at the Louvre. You simply shuffle--clump--stop--shuffle--clump--stop--shuffle--clump--stop---%26#39;..it%26#39;s smaller than I thought..%26#39;--shuffle--clump stop....along with everyone else.

But while looking at the Mona Lisa do not even TOUCH anything that could record or take a picture of it. They are VERY touchy about that. When I was there, they escorted about 7 people out for doing that!

Please, please, do yourself a big favor and LOOK around you on the way to the Mona Lisa, you%26#39;ll see paintings by DaVinci far more interesting (and big) not counting the endless works of art and archaeological treasures you can admire virtually alone in some cases, everywhere around the huge Louvre. Going to the Louvre JUST to see the Mona Lisa is... is... like going on a fishing trip and passing over your magnificent Great Barrier Reef without seeing it because someone told you there is this great big fish just after the Barrier...

New Years Eve, 3 years ago when I was there at that time it was a big disapointment, no official celebrations, no concerts, no fireworks organized by the mairie...Don%26#39;t know what it%26#39;s like recently. The tourists usually go to the Tour Eiffel base, don%26#39;t do it, there usually are drunken related disturbances, bottles flying around against cars, broken glass, etc. Sad. But everybody is in the streets, the metro turns into hell on earth soon after midnight, so the best would be a nice restaurant, nice meal, beter champagne and a good company.

Hello thommo3

although it will be a queue and a %26#39;crush%26#39; to see the Mona Lisa - I would still highly reccommend it. It really is an amazing picture (even stuck behind glass as it is now) and makes you realise why all of the 1,000%26#39;s of reproductions that you see of it just do not do it justice.

However, as previously mentioned, there are other GREAT paintings en-route to the Mona Lisa room, it is worth lingering and looking at them, rather than being swept along in the crowd.

The Louvre is excellent, anyway, so enjoy

Thanks so much for the advice, of course we will take in all the sights along the way. Sad to read that there aren%26#39;t New Years celebrations, I had very romantic visions of being in front of the Eiffel Tower at midnight, but you make it sound dangerous rather than romantic!
