Train vs renting car?

My husband and I will be traveling to France in May. We are thinking of spending 4 days in Paris and then going to South of France (undecided on which cities) for about 5-6 days. We don%26#39;t plan on renting a car during our stay in Paris but any advice on whether we should rent a car to go to the South of France or go by train? We%26#39;d like to see multiple cities-Nice, Cannes, Aix en Provence, and Marseilles at the least. Any suggestions on what transportation to use? Also, if by train, would you recommend Nice or Aix en Provence as our base city?

If Nice, Cannes, Marseilles and the main cities are all that you want to see, the train is very frequent and convenient down there.

IMO, Nice makes a better base city because every single train stops there, making it easy to go this way or that way at any time.

Without a car, could I recommend taking the train to see Monaco too if you haven%26#39;t already? That%26#39;s a parking nightmare, but it%26#39;s all walkable if you just took the train in.
