flying from paris to the U.S.

hi there. we will be flying from paris (CDG) to an american airport in three weeks, and then getting a connecting flight home to toronto. im wondering what recent experiences have been, in terms of carry-on items. i know liquids and gels are not permitted, but other than that, have you experienced other restrictions? what about lip balm in a sealed (brand new) package?

thanks for any help you can give me.

I haven%26#39;t traveled since the recent changes, but I don%26#39;t think it matters whether you have a sealed item or not. If it%26#39;s banned, it goes in the trash. For more specifics, you may also want to check your airline%26#39;s website (if you haven%26#39;t already).

We pulled out from our carry on all questionable items and put them in our checked luggage.

I came with a list of items and asked before we checked our luggage so we could slip all those questionable items into the checked bags.

We could not bring any liquids or gels or lotions in our carry-ons.

Check with the airlines you are flying because each have different requirements.

Even though the TSA says that umbrellas are ok after they are opened to check them our airline, USAIR would not let us bring it on board. Surprise! It came home intact as it would not fit in the check luggage and was sent on its own!

I was told lip balm had to go in checked luggage but you should check with your airline carriers. No foundation was allowed also on our airline%26#39;s carry ons.

Flew in country last week- No liquids, gel, or %26quot;semi solid%26quot; such as lipstick allowed past security. Everything banned, even if purchased in secure areas, must be tossed prior to boarding. So I guess lipbalm is banned as well, but check with your airline prior to departure. Rules always change.

Flew to Oakland this past weekend. I saw the TSA officers taking water bottles etc from people as they came threw security.

The thing that amazed me, was that people were buying things in the shops past the seurity check point. Like lip balm for example, and placing these purchases in their carryons and boarding the plane with them. There was no second check. So I%26#39;m wondering why bother?

Just look at the Charles de Gaulle website and follow the instruction there to the letter. There%26#39;s no point trying to get round the restrictions, they are there for a reason.

ajleonard, that%26#39;s good advice, unfortunately, ADP%26#39;s English translation of the security measures is to be found on... the French section of their website ! ;-)

New security measures: Aéroports de Paris invites passengers travelling to the United States, the United Kingdom and Israel to arrive to the airport earlier

Passengers departing from Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly airports to the United States, the United Kingdom and Israel are invited to arrive earlier to the airport due to the implementation of new security measures prior to boarding (100% hand baggage search applies to passengers flying to these countries). Aéroports de Paris advises passengers to contact their airline for more information.

Aéroports de Paris also reminds passengers travelling to the United States, the United Kingdom and Israël that following items are forbidden in cabin baggage: liquids, beauty creams, toothpastes, gels, or similar products. All these goods must be placed in hold luggage. Baby products and medical prescriptions bearing the name of the passenger are exempted.

Aéroports de Paris also invite passengers to visit their website www.aeroportsdeparis.fr or to use their new services SMS Info Vol and SMS Info Trajet to receive information about flight times and traffic conditions to the airport on their mobile phones.

I don%26#39;t know about the new changes but I can tell you it took us a FULL FOUR HOURS to get thru the myriad of lines

check in --- 90 minutes

clear customes -- 90 minutes

second check @ gate -- 30 minutes

the bus the the stairs to the plane

we were taking NWA Paris/Detroit

the line for customs was insanity -- I don%26#39;t know if it was a %26#39;work labour slowdown%26#39; or what.. but the line was out of control.

we went early - wanting to lounge, eat, shop, relax - before the flight - none of that happened... no time to even stop for the bathroom.

they did delay the plane 45 minutes to get as many people on board as they could.

It depends on the Terminal at CDG you are leaving from as to how hectic it is.

We had no long waits at Terminal 1. We got there 3 hours early.

Terminal 2 is a whole different story! get there at least 4 1/2 hours early!

|||

thanks for all of your responses. we are flying US air, but it doesnt say on our electronic ticket which terminal we leave from. does anyone know?

also, i might try to %26quot;smuggle%26quot; a new tube of liip balm in my carry-on. if it gets confiscated, no biggie. and, i was thinking we should arrive at the airport three hours early, but perhaps we should add on a little more time.

It depends on what type of lip balm you are buying. The %26quot;vasoline%26quot; type, which is squeezed through a tube will not be allowed, if they catch it. Chapstick type (which is harder and not squeezeable) is allowed. This was specifically noted to me during my last round of travels a week ago.

Also, there are suppose to do another round of screening before you get on your plane, but this was not done during my travels. A flight attendant noticed a passenger with a big bottle of mountain due about 30 minutes into the flight. That bottle was likely bought in the area beyond security.
