a small village

In July we will be taking the train into Avignon and then renting a car which we will be driving to Nice. But first we will be staying somewhere inbetween for 3 days. I would like to stay in a smaller village for something that is more relaxing, but still has some local life, a cafe or two, bakery, etc? I saw the village of Saignon which might fit the bill? But I haven%26#39;t heard much about it. Does anyone have any input on this small town? IS there a town?

Or do you have another suggestion for a small town? I also looked at Gordes but I think in July it might be a little too busy.

Saignon is fantastic. It is a perched village in Luberon with everything you are looking for except thousands of tourists and souvenir shops...

There are actually plenty of beautiful villages in this area that are not especially known because they are %26quot;hidden%26quot; by the too famous ones such as Gordes, Roussillon, Ménerbes and others...

%26quot;Viens%26quot; is a nice village too, as well as Goult or Simiane la Rotonde (more at the North-East)

If you look more for a small town and not a village, I would advise you Cavaillon, Saint Rémy de Provence or Salon de Provence, the three of them are plesant. St Rémy is much more touristic than the others.

Gordes is nothing else than a touristic village. The only remaining Provençal people to live there are the one working in restaurants and souvenir shops. Futhermore, it is very expansive.

Thank you so much Delphine! This is so helpful. It is hard to tell from descriptions sometimes just how crowded--or quiet--a place might be. I will look into the other villages you mentioned too, Merci beaucoup!
