Rental car vs. Rail

we are travelling to France for about 2 weeks in May. Spending 4 nihgts in Paris then going to south of France. 2-3 days in Marseilles, 2-3 days in Nice, 1 day in Cannes and 1-2 days in Lyon. Any suggestions on what%26#39;s better, renting a car or travelling by train. Please respond.

I do not believe you have enough time with this itinerary to drive both from and back to Paris.

You could take the train south and drive back. Preferably however I should suggest you simplify this voyage by staying longer in Paris, cut Marseilles, spend more time in Nice and perhaps visit Cannes during a day trip from Nice. This would allow a much more relaxing trip and greatly simplify travel which could all be easily done by train.

How many of you are there?

If you%26#39;re willing, the night train to the south is a good budget choice because it%26#39;s one less night of hotel room you need.

I just checked Kemwel for a single day rental, pick-up in Paris and drop-off at Marseilles train station on May 17. $77 for a two-seater. I%26#39;ll leave the math to you.

Remember that 2 or more people getting train tickets together get a discount.

Once you get to the south, I stand by my previous point, that the train system is so frequent and convenient, a car would be more pain than help...as long as you%26#39;re just interested in the cities.

Lyon is a bit of a monkey wrench in the whole equation...

Following Sarastro%26#39;s concern, do you have to go back to Paris when you%26#39;re done?

|||

Yes I do have to go back to Paris at the end to catch a flight back to the US. There are only 2 of us travelling.

I pretty much agree with everything Sarastro has said. It%26#39;s not clear to me what exactly you are trying to do but if your primary interest is in visiting the cities on your itinerary, then I would probably take an EasyJet flight from Paris to Nice, visit Cannes as a day trip by train and then take the train to Marseilles (~3 hours) and Lyon (~1.5 hours) before returning to Paris (~2 hours). IIRC it only takes about 20-25 minutes to get from Nice to Cannes. They are not far enough apart to warrant all the hassle of changing hotels IMO.

OTOH if you have an interest in visiting other places then I would not use either Marseilles or Lyon as a base and would probably suggest something completely different.

You could as DA suggests take a night train to Nice but that would not be my choice for a number of reasons.
