We are staying at La Villette as part of our Trafalgar tour and have chosen to stay on afterwards for another 4 nights at this hotel. Am I right in thinking we will be some way from the main attractions?? Is there a metro line close by that will get us to these easily enough?? Is there much in this area to see and do - shopping, cafes etc.

HOLIDAY INN PARIS--La Villette (4-star) --216 Ave Jean Jaurès (at: sente des Dorees) 75019, Metro: PORTE de PANTIN-#5 ligne--
http://www.holidayinn-parisvillette.com/
This hotel is only %26#39;..in..%26#39; Paris by virtue of being located one block (approx 75-100 meters), inside of the Péripherique. It will certainly be a %26#39;..convenient..%26#39; hotel to the on / off ramps of the Périphérique and have convenient parking for behemouth tour buses (which is why the tour company selected it).....by that%26#39;s about it. There is the large La Villette park and exhibition space near by...and the positively enchanting Parc Butte Chaumont is within walking distance...but not a lot else. This MAY be one of those rare locations in Paris where a restaurant in a Holiday Inn may be the best one in the neighborhood.
I suppose the %26#39;..good news..%26#39; is that there will be an entrance to the PORTE de PANTIN Metro station within a few steps of the hotel on Ave Jean Jaurès, which with a train change at either GARE d%26#39; EST, GARE du NORD, REPUBLIQUE or BASTILE, will get you to the %26#39;..PARIS..%26#39; you probably came to visit in about 25-35 minutes.

Years ago, my husband and I stayed at the HI La Villette as part of a Trafalgar tour. You will find the hotel very accommodating, the area is far from the supposed centre of things but they are very easy to get to. The Metro is just a short walk away (turn left outside the hotel and you will come to it) and it will connect you with ease down town. There are many take away middle-eastern food outlets in the area and quite a few other restaurants, one of which we enjoyed immensely, and they were very nice too, especially when they found out we were neither American nor English but antipodean.
As for shopping, I would go further afield and participate in that passtime on your way from one monument or museum to another. The Metro and RER are wonderful modes of transport on an easily navigable system.
Next time you travel to Paris, you may choose to go to a single digit arrondissement but this time the location of where you are staying will be fine. Hope you have a great time.
