Uni Students in Paris

Hi everyone!

My friend and I are planning to visit Paris in late May/early June. We are both studying abroad in London right now, and this will be our last adventure together before heading home to the States. We%26#39;re looking for advice for the cheapest way to get there, decent places to stay that are also cheap, and any other relevant advice. Obviously, we are students, so our money is limited. I don%26#39;t speak any french, although my friend does, so we should be fine with the communication aspect. We are also thinking about day trips to Versailles and Normandy, so any advice there would be welcome. Thank you all for your help!

I%26#39;m 18 and have just come back from a visit to Paris, 29th of March to the 1st of April. I went with a friend, we stayed in the Best Western Au Trocadero Hotel, which was quite expensive but well worth it. (best hotel I%26#39;ve ever stayed in) Through a travel agent (Going places) we got an offer of 3 for 2 nights at the hotel and Eurostar return between London Waterloo and Gare du Nord, which I think came to about £350. The Paris Metro is one of the best things about Paris. It is 1.40 euros for a single ticket, and just under 11 euros for a book of 10 tickets. 1.4 euros = £1. (1 euro = 70 pence eg A 5 euro bag = 5 x 7 = £3.50, sorry I don%26#39;t know the exchange rate between dollars and euros.) In comparison, a single ticket on the tube in London for Zone 1 is £4!!! We didn%26#39;t use the buses, the metro is so easy to use, but they may have been cheaper. As for food, look for local supermarkets like Monoprix and grocery shops. You can get lunch for around 3 euros each for a sandwich or pasta pot, and there are food stands selling crepes from 2 euros and hot dogs for 3.5 euros. Visiting the Louvre is relatively cheap. Compare prices between souvenir shops, the ones down the Champs-Elysees are WAY more expensive than further out of the centre. So, apart from buying food locally and exploring using the metro, I can%26#39;t think of anything else, have a great trip!

Nikara,

Easyjet is going to be one of your best options are far as a flight goes. If you were to book now, you would definitely find something for less than $100 roundtrip. Secondly, check out http://paris.craigslist.org/ for a place to stay if you%26#39;re not wanting to necessarily stay in a hotel, but don%26#39;t want to do the hostel thing either. Also, if you can manage to find an apartment on craigslist, that will also save you money because you%26#39;ll be able to cook things in the kitchen, as opposed to going out to eat for every meal.

Note: Bus tickets and Metro tickets cost exactly the same. Monoprix isn%26#39;t really one of the cheaper grocery stores, in my opinion. Franprix is good/inexpensive, and ED is inexpensive as well.

Good luck!

Hi Nikara

You have not given any details of your budget per night in Euros which is useful, as are details like whether you are happy in a dorm room in a hostel or in a room in a hotel with shared bathroom etc. There are a lot of recent threads on cheap accommodation and also on day trips to both Versailles (close and easy) and Normandy (not so easy for a day trip and most coach trips for the day are expensive).

Here are a couple of very recent posts on cheap accommodation. Do a search on the upper right of the forum for more

See how you go and if you find nothing in those or on www.eurocheapo.com come back for more advice with more details
