costs in europe

My daughter is traveling to 6 different countries in Europe this summer as a student ambassador to the US. I am wondering what the costs are for common goods (in American dollars) such as food, drinks, souvenirs, health and beauty products, etc. Can anyone advise?

really depends on where you buy them.. I would count on twice what you might pay at a place like walmart at home.

|||

We%26#39;d better send her with plenty of cash!! That seems to be the consensus among all.

Thanks so much!

|||

It depends.

If she wants to eat the same food and drink the same drinks as she does in the US, quite a bit of money will be needed. If she wants to take the time to find out what the locals eat, and where, then she will not need nearly so much. In this case, food will probably work out at about 40Euros a day (this may seem a lot, but it%26#39;s only because the US dollar isn%26#39;t worth very much at all) eating every meal out.

What%26#39;s %26quot;normal%26quot; for souveniers?? I have no idea, I last bought a %26quot;souvenier%26quot; about 30 years ago. Drinks are cheap, as every tap has water. Beauty products - why wouldnt she bring her own?

I wouldn%26#39;t send her off with plenty of cash. You don%26#39;t say what age your daughter is, but couldn%26#39;t she have a debit or credit card, and use ATMs.

She must be very excited and you must be a proud Mummy! Hope she has a great time and lots of good experiences.

Beauty products - like shampoo, contact solution, etc. The airlines only allow like 2 oz. or something like that and she%26#39;ll be there for 3 weeks. She%26#39;s 13 and I know she%26#39;ll go through more than what they are going to allow her to pack. I%26#39;m going to encourage her to buy local products and not the American names. Try and get her to get the European experience and not rely on familiars.

We are going to send her with a Visa Buxx card. I just wasn%26#39;t sure how much to put on it. I%26#39;m going to figure on about $50 USD per day as all of her meals are included. Just wanted to cover her in case she wants extra of anything. I want her to have a really good time and a great experience. I don%26#39;t want her to miss out on anything because of money. They get several hours a day to explore on their own.

You are not kidding, I am an EXTREMELY proud Mom!!

Thanks everyone for your great advice!

She can take more than tiny bottles of shampoo,.. : she just has to put them in her checked luggage, the size restricion applies only to carry ons.

|||

Really?!!? Her delegation leaders are telling us only tiny bottles due to the regs? I%26#39;ll have to check for myself.

Your id says you are from Paris. I have a question for you.

We live near NY city and go there frequently. When in NY, you can buy many designer bags right on the street, some real, so not. In fact, the practice is mostly illegal, but a lot of fun!

In Paris, do you have this type of practice? Like maybe Chanel knock offs or something like that? Also, are Lancome cosmetics expensive there?

Just curious. Thanks!!

|||

Fake designer bags are highly illegal in France, if you are caught with one (whereever you got it) it will be conficated and you%26#39;ll have to pay trice the price of the REAL one. (With 3 ore more units you could face a prison sentence for forgery, use of fake and smuggling).

Lanome products are about the same price worlwide.

|||

WOW!! That stuff is taken VERY seriously over there!! I know she wouldn%26#39;t do it on her own, but I was curious. It is so interesting to hear of the differences between the US and Europe. I hope to get over there one day, myself.

In fact, instead of a sweet sixteen party for my girls, I%26#39;m going to try and talk them into a trip abroad. They%26#39;ll get much more out of something like that than a one night party.

Thanks for the great information!
