I am going to be taking a train from Avignon June 7 to Montpellier, staying overnight then leaving in the morning for Barcelona.
I want to leave Avignon late in the afternoon and the only times available are for 2nd class from Avignon to Nimes then 1st class to Montpellier. The entire trip is only about an hour so I will be spending 1/2 an hour in 2nd and 1/2 an hour in 1st class.
I will be dropping off my car in Avignon then spending the day seeing some of Avignon. I could be more seredipitous with my time if I did not have a specific departure time.
Do you think I should book a ticket now or just take my chances on getting on the train and being in 2nd class the whole hour?

Just take your chances.
The train service is frequent.
The last time that I did this was 20 years ago--that wisdom should still be good? I had one ticket and just jumped on and off at lots of stations from Grenoble, through Avignon all the way to Barcelona, looked around a few town centers, and then caught subsequent trains to continue on. Did I spend a night in Nimes or Narbonne? I don%26#39;t remember which one. The trains that do not need reserved seats are easy.

I%26#39;m not sure where you are getting your train information from but there are at least a dozen direct trains daily from Avignon Centre to Montpellier taking an hour (give or take five minutes). I am pretty sure all these trains are second class only local %26quot;Ter%26quot; trains without reserved seating so no need to pre-purchase your tickets. The last direct train leaves Avignon Centre at about 20:00 and arrives in Montpellier at about 21:00 IIRC.

Yes, I am using Voyages-sncf - with the help of Irishrovr and MorganB%26#39;s excellent tutelage - so I see that there are lots of travel times. I just wanted to make sure that 2nd class was fine and that I did not need to reserve a specific time. Thank you all so much.
