Jeans in Paris

My wife and I are going to Paris the last week of April. She has heard that Jeans are taboo in Paris restaurants. Is this true? We don%26#39;t plan on going to any real fancy restaurants and we understand that Jeans and T-shirts are not proper. Any input would be appreciated.

I am by no means an expert here, as I only recently spent just a week there, but we wore jeans out to most lunches, and even dinners, and weren%26#39;t treated any differently than anyone else. Granted, we ate mostly in casual cafes. The people going into the nicer restaurants were wearing slacks and blazers or suits.

Goblue ~ Jeans have been discussed many times on this Forum. Most recently there was a thread about %26quot;fancy%26quot; jeans. If your wife (or you) would like to read more about wearing them, just type in fancy jeans or jeans, into the search box. Reading some additional threads might put your minds at ease.

Just back from Paris yesterday. We only packed jeans. Jeans were everywhere. Khaki pants where even spotted! Black jeans, blue jeans, cords you name it. Dark colors even though it is spring. I don%26#39;t think anyone in Paris would wear pink or light blue - unless it was a $200 scarf.

Dress the jeans up with nice clean shoes, a smart top, and you will look just like a local! Lots of black - LOTS.

Horrified by the fashions in London - Are white mini shorts the new rage? They looked awful on even the skinniest girls! And high heels with bows on the toes - EWWWW!

Yes, dark jeans are commonplace. Let your wife know that scarves are also very popular!

siesta - you made me laugh out loud! Goblue - I actually started the %26quot;fancy%26quot; jeans thread - there is a lot of good information on it! I think as long as you wear shoes other than tennis shoes with your jeans and as the OP said a smart top, and I think you%26#39;ll look fine. Now I just have to decide on what kind of scarf to bring and how to wear it, LOL! I keep picking scarves up when I go shopping but I have no idea what color to purchase....I feel so out of fashion!

Oh nooooooooooo! We%26#39;re leaving tomorrow night and I bought some sweaters (light gray, navy blue, etc) to pair with pink cami%26#39;s etc! Geeeez, aren%26#39;t I just going to scream %26quot;American%26quot; or what?! I%26#39;m leaving my black coat at home, I just can%26#39;t bear it anymore now that it%26#39;s spring.

siestaclaud - White mini skirts in london would be the dress of choice for the more chavvy element of girls from Essex (before you start, I am from Essex!).

I bet they had red or white stilettos as well.

As for jeans in Paris, they are perfectly acceptable although the ones with the rips in them that are so popular amongst teenagers here may raise an eyebrow or two.

I wear jeans in Paris all the time. I think what makes a difference, as some posters have already pointed out, is what you wear *with* the jeans. I usually wear either my practical black leather boots (short heel), or if I%26#39;m going out in the evening, I wear a nice high heeled shoe.

In my opinion, the only thing that %26#39;screams american%26#39; is a pair of (usually white) tennis/running shoes, with jeans and a t-shirt/sweatshirt.

We just returned from Paris and saw people wearing jeans everywhere we went. Granted, we did not frequent fancy restaurants and establishements, but in the cafes, there were a lot of jeans. The Parisians look very fashionable in their jeans because of the way they accessorize, and a scarf seems to be a must have item, even for men. But of course, you can buy scarves almost anywhere in Paris and blend in with the locals! Boots with jeans seem to be the most popular, but with the amount of walking one does in Paris, the most important factor is comfort.

We returned from Paris last Thursday and let me tell you: Jeans are accepted everywhere. Paris is modern/cosmopilitan city and as such is open to all trends and lifestyles. Don%26#39;t worry: be yourself, be comfortable, you%26#39;ll be just fine.

Relax and enjoy the ride.
