Hello, thinking about a solo trip to Paris late this summer. Only for a week, so thnking of just doing a carry on( I can pack pretty light) , one thing I am thinking of elimanating is a camera... I tend to like to only take a picture if someone I know is in it, in other words, if I take a picture of a sight , or even a pretty alley, I would have my hubby or one of the kids stand in the shot, I just find I prefer those types of photos for memories( I do understand that some of you are artists with your camera, I am not)
So, since I will be on my own, and I do already have quite a few shots of the Eiffel Tower, etc. LOL , I am thinking of eliminanting one more thing to worry about.
How many of you , who HAVE been to Paris at least serveral times, would not bring a camera?? I am terrible at putting photos in albums anyways, they sit in the envelopes from the developing store, I show them to a handful of people then they are stored away to be put in albums %26quot;later%26quot; .. later never comes. I also haven%26#39;t downloaded my last pictures from our spring break cruise this year, so , basically , I really suck at this retaining of memories for all time.
I do like taking shots though, sometimes you just want to capture an image forever, fortunately I can do that in my heart.. but.. still, what do you all do ?

Joan,
We%26#39;ll be there for our 7th month long trip in Nov and no, I would never leave my camera at home.
I have however cut it down to a minimum of %26#39;gear%26#39;. The camera itself is a small, but decent, digital that I can fit in my pocket and I specifically got one that takes AA batteries - so no charger to lug around - I can get AA batteries anywhere.
Sometimes it stays in my pocket/purse for a week or more without use. But you know, as well as I, that if you leave it home something momentous will happen and you%26#39;ll be kicking yourself.

I carry a little camera and enjoy taking pictures. But if this is not an interest, why bother?
Speaking of photos...

My photos of a trip are what bring the trip alive once I%26#39;m home. The beauty of the Pantheon, the enormity of the Louvre, the charming Parisian doors and delightful street scenes etc etc....when I study my pictures I see details that I missed when I was there. Everything seems so much larger than life in Paris that I think we often can%26#39;t fully appreciate it all when we are walking by one fabulous sight after another. I took over 200 photos in 5 days and am thoroughly enjoying them every day on my computer. My photos are very precious to me.

I think you answered your own question. The second half of your post sounds like you%26#39;re trying to talk yourself out of taking the camera. I take horrible pictures, myself. Any pictures I take have half a person or I%26#39;ve forgotten the flash, I%26#39;m just awful at it. I wouldn%26#39;t take a camera on a solo trip. For a different reason, I feel like you don%26#39;t feel the need to take it. Not that it is so much to pack even if you don%26#39;t use it though.

Sounds ilke you%26#39;d love to give yourself permission to leave it at home. Sometimes documenting a trip becomes burdensome. If you%26#39;ll enjoy freedom from the camera, then by all means, don%26#39;t take it. If you%26#39;re plagued with regret once you get there, you can always buy a small disposable camera in Paris.

I solo travel for parts of my trips to France .....and I regret to tell you I always take my camera!
I always see different things and I want to capture them.
It would have to be your own choice... as I am no help to you.
|||
I never bring a camera, hey I don%26#39;t own one! Mind%26#39;s eye and all that.
It is not mandatory so if you think you can do without....it is YOUR trip!
I%26#39;ve been on tours where on limited %26quot;free time%26quot; folks are ruching around taking pictures. I, solo or with S/O, having a drink and admiring the scenery..and locking it in the memory bank and enjoying the moment!

I like your thinking, geordy. Do you ever wonder if those people who are rushing around taking a million pictures instead of LOOKING at where they are can even remember the trip without looking at their pictures?
|||
I guess you%26#39;re either a photographer or you%26#39;re not. It%26#39;s a stereotype to say that people who take millions of pictures are rushing about and not looking. People have different types of memory banks. It%26#39;s the detail of a drop of water on a leaf, or the vast display of cheese in a shop window or a bird on the head of a statue that I doubt I could remember forever. But I will through my photos.

I Know some of them can%26#39;t..have you ever looked at someone%26#39;s prize photos and asked ,%26quot;and where was this lovely shot taken?%26#39; and the reply is %26quot; ah that%26#39;s, I think--------, no Honey I think that%26#39;s --------or it could be--------!
I leave it to the experts! Which is not to say if you enjoy it and take good photos go for It!!
But when folks say to me, oh take plenty of pictures I say....pictures , lovely as they can be,don%26#39;t begin to evoke Paris(or choose your place) GO!!!!
