Pont St Martin, Loire / Nantes

Hi

Heading to Pont St Martin in June and staying in a gite on Rue du grand moulin. Just looking for some general info about the place as cant seem to find too much on the net. Really want to head into Nantes for the day and wanted to know the best way to go other than car as don%26#39;t want to drive into the city. Any other info about the area would be appriciated such as where to eat and drink and best places to vist near.

Pont-St-Martin is a nice little village south of Nantes, with the Ognon river running through it. It doesn%26#39;t have a railway station, but I think there might be a bus service into Nantes - I am sure I have seen bus stops. Otherwise drive to some village that *is* on a railway line (Machecoul, to the SW, or Ste-Pazanne, to the W), and leave the car there while you take a train.

If you were interested in fishing, it would be fine!

Otherwise, for places to visit nearby:

A little way south-west is the village of La Chevroliere, from which you can go another km or so west to Passay. This is quite a sweet fishermen%26#39;s village, but on a lake rather than the sea. The huge Lac de Grand-Lieu is visible from very few places, and this is one of them. There is a good little museum of fishing life in a sort of lighthouse building. And if you are an adventurous eater, somebody recommended to me Aux Pecheurs, a restaurant in the village that is strong on eels, frogs legs and all the stuff they catch in the lake.

St-Philbert de Grand-Lieu is a nice village just to the south of the lake, with a seriously ancient church, and an attractive riverside.

You should try to visit Clisson, a curiously Italianate little town to the SE of Nantes (take the car to this one, no problem).

I have recommended a lot of restaurants on www.the-vendee.co.uk which, although it is mainly devoted to the Vendee, does stray outside into Loire-Atlantique a bit.
