I will be staying 5 days at the Hyatt near the airport while my partner is attending a conference. How long will the trip be to down town? Is it easy and affordable? what are my best options?

Assuming you intend to travel into Paris every day using the RER and métro your best option would be a Carte Orange for Zones 1-5 costing 31€50. Considering that one RT from CDG to the center of Paris would cost you 16€20 this is a heck of a bargain. For the CO to work, however, your five days must be between Monday and the following Sunday. IOW it would not work if you were arriving on Friday and leaving on Tuesday for example. In such a case a five day Zone 1-5 PV pass costing 46€60, valid for any five consecutive days, would be your best option. Just by way of comparison a taxi would cost about 50€ one way.
Either pass would cover all your travel by bus, RER and métro beween CDG and Paris as many times a day as you felt like making the trip, within Paris and to anywhere outside paris within Zones 1-5, e.g. Versailles which is in Zone 4.
If your partner is able to join you in Paris in the evenings (I am assuming his conference is actually at the CDG Hyatt) the same pass would work for him.
For the CO you will need to have a small (~1.25%26quot; x ~1%26quot;) passport-type photo. Doesn%26#39;t have to be anything fancy. Just cut a suitably sized and recognizable head from an unwanted snapshot for example.
It will take you between 35 minutes and perhaps an hour to get to just about anywhere in Paris from CDG. The RER Line B will take you direct to the St. Michel/Notre Dame station in about 35 minutes, for example. And yes, it is easy.
