Buying Rail Tickets

I will be traveling to Paris from Montpellier on the 2nd of July.

Here%26#39;s my question of the day....

I go to this website and for 2 one way tickets it seems that the least expensive price is around 98euros each. It seems like a lot to me, am I doing something wrong?

I thought train travel in Europe was pretty economical. Is it because I only need one way?

And if this is the least expensive do I really even need to buy in advance?

Thanks!

No , you didn%26#39;t make any mistake .. and for that price , you have no refundable tickets ! the %26#39;normal%26#39; price is almost double .; the train is not cheap in France , but it is fast !

And it wouldn%26#39;t be cheaper if you bought a ticket with return ; the fare depends on distance mostly , and the period of your journey , more expensive if it is in a busy period like holidays .

If you don%26#39;t make reservation , the risk is that you don%26#39;t get seats .. but as i mentionned , the economic fare ticket is no refundable , so you have to be prety sure you will use it !

You are seeing a fare of 98€ for TWO tickets, second class PREMS fare. This fare (49€ pax) is available on several trains on July 2. I also on a quick search found several trains with FIRST class PREMS fares of 45€, lower than the lowest available second class fare. You can find this fare on the 06:24 train as well as the 16:24 and 17:24 trains.

The full fare in second classs on this route is ~93€, first class ~123€ pax, but might be more on certain trains. These tickets are fully refndable. PREMS tkickets are non-refundable and cannot be exchenged.

Thanks for the reply, I will have to do some more research. It seems I am making it harder than it needs to be,

I don%26#39;t know if you have already read this %26quot;how to%26quot; by MorganB or if it will be helpful but it might be: http://tinyurl.com/qpdef

If you tell the SNCF booking engine that there will be two or more people travelling and indicate their ages you will be shown the *total* fare for all passengers.

Hope this helps. Bon voyage par train!
